"Working with Alan Sherburne on the renovation of and addition to our home was a pleasure from the start. In 2001, we bought an old, neglected farmhouse that required extensive foundation and structural renovation. On his own initiative, Alan researched our house at the Nantucket Historical Association, finding 100 year old photos and additional information about the original owner. We believe the photos and history that Alan discovered were very helpful when going before the HDC (Historic District Commission) to receive favorable approval to make minor alterations in the exterior of the house that would restore it to its original appearance. In addition, Alan's research resulted in us learning history about our house that we may never have uncovered on our own.
One of the key elements in our project was having trust in our builder; we live 1800 miles away year round, and it was essential that we feel confidence and trust in our builder. This was one of the best aspects of working with Alan. From the start he was straightforward, direct, honest, and realistic, especially when delivering news about issues that we encountered along the way. Alan was in daily contact with us by phone, also sharing photos on a regular basis. It was clear throughout the process that Alan took immense pride in his craft and workmanship; we have worked with builders in other places where they are mostly interested in doing things their way and moving on to the next project. With Alan we always sensed that his priorities were making sure that the workmanship was excellent and that we were pleased with the work.
Perhaps the best testament to Alan's work is that we consider Alan and Lisa to be good friends, 5 years after completion of our beautiful home. Based on the care and attention that he gave to our project, his attention to detail, the constant and regular reporting, the extra suggestions and ideas that he came up with along the way, we repeatedly said how lucky we were to have a builder we trusted so completely.
